[Nemuro City] Hashiya Confectionery
A never-changing local flavor, the Olanda Senbei

Olanda Senbei (Dutch crackers) are a beloved, local snack in Nemuro City. Hashiya Confectionery, a long-standing confectionery shop founded in 1950, has been making them continuously since 1968. “Originally Olanda Senbei had a hard texture, but we made a version with a soft, chewy texture,” explains the executive director, Yosuke Hashiya. “At the time, there were several movie theaters in the city, so we made the texture softer to let people eat them while watching a movie and not have to worry about the noise.” Hashiya Confectionery’s unique take on the snack features a rich, brown sugar flavor and a satisfying size. When you pull apart the thin, soft dough, a sweet yet subtle aroma fills the air. With the first bite, a comforting, delicate flavor spreads across your palate. Although Olanda Senbei are also available at roadside rest area, Michi-no-Eki Swan 44 Nemuro, if you visit Hashiya Confectionery at just the right time, you might be lucky enough to get your hands on a freshly baked Olanda Senbei.
