[Nemuro City] Convenience Store Taie

A welcome treat—Grilled Sanma Sushi delivered straight to the platform on Nemuro Station

Founded in 1931, Taie has long served Nemuro locals as a general store, minisupermarket, and caterer before taking on its current form as a convenience store with four locations across the city. The third-generation president, Mr. Toru Taie, developed Grilled Sanma Sushi using Pacific saury from Nemuro, which boasts the largest catch volume in Japan. Pacific saury is coated in a salty-and-sweet sauce, grilled until plump and fragrant, then served atop vinegared rice. It is sold as an autumn-only specialty, available during the peak season for Pacific saury. “Its a flavor we created together with the input of our employees,” says the president modestly. Their creation has been drawing growing attention. As part of an initiative by the JR Hokkaido Kushiro Branch, Grilled Sanma Sushi has become a staple flavor of Nemuro Station since the spring of 2018. You can have it delivered to the platform if you call Taie’s head office by noon one day in advance to make a reservation. Orders begin at one box. For a long time, Nemuro Station had no bento (packed lunch) available, making this truly a long-awaited treat. Be sure to enjoy it on the train.

*Sold only in autumn (peak season for Pacific saury) at four Taie stores.

Yakitori Bento (medium) is a popular item at Taie. This authentic Yakitori Bento is certified by the originator of the meal, Hakodate’s Hasegawa Store. It can also be delivered to the platform at Nemuro Station.

Sanma-bushi Ramen (dried noodles) is recommended as a souvenir. Sanma-bushi is made by grilling Pacific saury, removing the excess fat through hot-water blanching, then drying it and crumbling it into flakes. The soup is made from this ingredient, resulting in a rich broth packed with umami from Pacific saury.
