[Akkeshi Town] Akkeshi Ekimae Ujiie Machiaisho
A customer favorite—Kaki-meshi Bento with delectable rice cooked in oyster broth

Created in 1963, Kaki–meshi Bento is Akkeshi’s standout ekiben (railway station packed lunch). A hot commodity at the Akkeshi Oyster Festival held every May and November, its popularity lies not only in the appeal of its ingredients, but also in the exquisite taste of the rice cooked in a broth made from slowly simmering oysters in a secret sauce. Different sweeteners are used for the toppings: clams with rock sugar, whelk with coarse sugar, and butterbur with brown sugar. Shiitake mushrooms and shredded Nori seaweed are added to complete the meal. The rice absorbs a generous amount of the oyster broth, and the soy sauce perfectly balances the sweetness, making it a dish you never tire of. A standard bento (packed lunch) comes with 200 g of rice, but the Kaki–meshi Bento boasts a very satisfying serving of 270 g. Although the onigiri version uses the same rice, it has a slightly different taste, making it another enticing option to try.
